01Purpose of Opinions
Opinions exists for disagreement. Having a view, explaining why, and listening to the other side is the whole point.
02Good-faith debate
Respond to what someone actually said. Argue honestly, even when you argue hard.
03Strong disagreement is allowed
Allowed vs not allowed
Allowed
- Strong, blunt disagreement
- Unpopular or offensive-to-some opinions
- Criticism of ideas, beliefs, institutions and public figures' actions
- Satire and humour
Not allowed
- Harassment and targeted abuse
- Threats
- Illegal hate
- Doxxing
- Illegal content
04Personal attacks
Challenge the idea, not the person. Insults aimed at someone instead of their argument aren’t debate.
05Harassment
No repeated unwanted contact, pile-ons, or following someone across debates to target them.
06Threats and violence
No threats, incitement or glorification of violence against anyone.
07Hate and discrimination
No attacks on people based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age. Discussing these topics is allowed; dehumanising people is not.
08Doxxing and personal information
Never share someone’s private information — addresses, phone numbers, workplaces, private photos — without consent.
09Impersonation
Don’t pretend to be another person or organisation in a misleading way.
10Child safety
Zero tolerance for any content that sexualises or endangers children. We remove it and report it to the relevant authorities.
11Sexual exploitation
No content that exploits people sexually, including trafficking or solicitation.
12Non-consensual intimate imagery
Never share, or threaten to share, intimate images of someone without their consent.
13Terrorism and extremism
No content that promotes, supports or recruits for terrorist or violent extremist groups. Discussing terrorism critically or as news is allowed.
14Fraud and scams
No scams, phishing, fake giveaways or deceptive schemes.
15Illegal goods and services
No selling or facilitating illegal drugs, weapons or other illegal goods or services.
16Self-harm and suicide
Don’t encourage or give instructions for suicide or self-harm. Talking about your own experiences or recovery is allowed. If you are struggling, Samaritans are available on 116 123.
17Graphic and sexual content
No pornography or gratuitously graphic violence.
18Spam
No repetitive posting, link spam or posting the same opinion over and over.
19Bots
No automated accounts or automated posting without our permission.
20Coordinated manipulation
No organising groups or networks of accounts to artificially push or bury content.
21Vote and engagement manipulation
No fake accounts, vote trading or other tricks to change results.
22Intellectual property
Only post content you have the right to share. See Copyright & IP.
23Misinformation and manipulated media
Being wrong is not against the rules, and lawful misinformation is not automatically illegal. We act on deliberately deceptive content that risks real harm, fabricated quotes or statistics presented as real, and manipulated media designed to mislead.
24Political discussion
All lawful political views are welcome. We never moderate based on whether we agree with a view.
25Elections
Don’t post false information about how, when or where to vote, or try to intimidate voters.
26Public figures
You can criticise public figures’ actions and views robustly. Threats, harassment and sexualised abuse are still not allowed.
27Parody and satire
Allowed when it is clear it’s parody and not likely to deceive.
28Username and profile rules
Usernames, display names, bios and pictures follow the same rules as everything else.
29Repeated violations
Repeat breaches lead to stronger action, up to a permanent ban.
30Enforcement
Actions include content removal, warnings, feature restrictions, suspensions and bans. See Moderation & Appeals.
31Reporting
Report anything that breaks these rules. Reports are for behaviour, not for opinions you dislike. See Reporting & Complaints.
32Appeals
If you think we got it wrong, you can ask for another review.
33Updates
We update these Guidelines as Opinions grows and will flag significant changes.
